What is indoor drumline?
Indoor drumline is a standalone performance ensemble, separate from the marching band, that runs from early November through the first weekend of April. We perform a ~5 minute show that is a combination of the musical and thematic elements we incorporate into our fall marching band halftime shows, but performed indoors and consisting only of marching battery and front ensemble instrumentation. This video is a group at the top level of the activity (all college students). This video is a high school from the same competitive circuit we would be a part of (KIDA), although a different division.
We will be rehearsing regularly during the winter/spring, and traveling to and performing at local competitions from January through March through our competitive local circuit, KIDA. Indoor drumline is a competitive ensemble, receiving feedback from adjudicators at each show we perform throughout the season, culminating with a championships performance the first week of April.
Additionally, membership in the ensemble is open to all band members, not just existing drumline members. If folks have any interest (a trumpet player that wants to march crash cymbals; a clarinet who can play piano & wants to learn a marimba part, etc.) we would love to have you! There will be evaluations for placement purposes, but our goal is to involve anyone who is interested and committed to the ensemble in some capacity.
Instrumentation
Exact instrumentation will be based on auditions, but we will likely follow the below guidelines or similar for purposes of ensemble cohesion, balance, and musical achievement.
Marching Battery
- (4) Snare Drums
- (2) Tenors
- (5) Bass Drums (smaller sizes than outdoor)
- (4) Crash Cymbals
Front Ensemble
- (2) Marimbas
- (2) Vibraphones
- (2) Xylophones
- (1) Glockenspiel / Chimes
- (2) Auxiliary Percussionists (gong/bass drum, shakers, woodblocks, suspended cymbal, chimes, etc.)
- (2) Synth/Piano
- (1) Bass and/or Electric Guitar (tentative)
Schedule
The following schedule is current as of October 3rd, 2024. Exact times may also vary per-section, and rehearsal end time is the latest we will dismiss (including tear-down/packing up).
Our intent is to have the Auxiliary Gym booked for the majority of our Thursday evening rehearsals, allowing us to work on the music and drill together simultaneously, or have the battery work on cleaning drill in the Aux Gym while the front works music in the band room, etc.
**Please note that inability to attend every date does NOT preclude you from being a member of the ensemble, rather those dates should be communicated prior to auditions.
